As part of my business studies course, I completed a one-week work experience placement at Merx Marketing Ltd. I contacted Merx Marketing around a month before my placement began, and a team member named Oliver stayed in regular contact with me to understand my strengths, weaknesses, and areas I wanted to improve in. I explained that I had many marketing queries, and in response, the team sent me helpful marketing resources and links to review, as well as daily tasks that were going to be assigned to me before my week started. This helped me feel prepared and settle in quickly once the placement began. My week at Merx Marketing provided me with many learning opportunities, particularly in the areas I wanted to improve. I settled in quickly, and the team was welcoming and supportive.

What I Learned About Real-World Marketing

My initial thought of Marketing

Coming into Merx Marketing and navigating how marketing works was all quite new to me, as a first-year college student studying business, my knowledge of marketing was quite limited. My initial understanding of marketing was centred on ads and social media posts, with the overall goal of boosting the company's brand name. My week at Merx Marketing has shown me that there's much more to marketing than meets the eye.

While working at Merx Marketing, I've developed my understanding of marketing by gaining a solid overview of SEO, social media, and Google Business Profiles. I learned how search intent, keywords, and content structure influence a business’s visibility on search engines, and how different types of content serve different purposes, such as informational blogs, commercial pages, and local service pages.

My learnt views on marketing

In addition, I now know how to use Canva correctly by creating and editing branded content for real marketing use. I learned how to apply brand colours, fonts, and layouts consistently to ensure each design aligned with the company’s visual identity. This experience helped me understand how strong branding and clear design improve engagement and recognition across social media.

Alongside this, I completed practical tasks such as directory listings for real clients and research-based activities, which gave me more insight into how potential customers are reached and the way customers get a better understanding of the company's services and professionals. This allowed me to see how design, strategy, and consistency work together in a professional marketing environment.

Merx marketing work environment

Environment\

The workplace environment was the opposite of usual business firms, where everything is quite structured, strict; here at Merx, the working structure is flexible and allows you to work at your own pace, creating a relaxed and easy-going atmosphere where creativity and ideas can flow naturally, but there's still that focused and strong work ethic that makes their work of such great quality, why their clients work with them.

The team had a great attitude, and the positive energy of the team made it a genuinely enjoyable place to work. Being surrounded by such encouraging and friendly people helped boost my confidence and made the experience feel both professional and welcoming. They were always of assistance, and I never felt like a burden when asking for clarification or assistance with tasks.

The team

Daniel, the creator of Merx Marketing, was the one I first met and made sure I settled in well and regularly checked up on how I was getting on, and included me in work activities that made me feel like I was a part of their team. Oliver, the SEO & Content Writer, and Glen, the Account Manager, were especially insightful and supportive when it came to areas I found challenging. They took the time to explain concepts clearly and ensured I fully understood the content I was learning. Their patience and commitment made me feel comfortable when asking for assistance on tasks that might be considered simple, and they would share helpful resources that gave me a clearer visual understanding.

What will I take away from my experience?

Practical work makes a difference

As a college student, I recognise that there is only so much that can be learned in a classroom environment. My time at Merx Marketing demonstrated the importance of practical experience, as gaining hands-on insight into marketing significantly improved my understanding of how it works. This experience has also given me greater confidence for when I return to college next week.

My work experience at Merx made me realise that marketing is something I genuinely want to pursue as a future career. The experience encouraged me to aim for university so I can earn my degree and, one day, hopefully start my own digital marketing company like Daniel.

What I enjoyed most

Overall, the tasks I enjoyed most involved using Canva to turn marketing ideas into memorable content, seeing how the use of social media apps like TikTok and Instagram can be used to boost a brand's image, and giving customers insight into the purpose and personality of a business.

How Merx marketing helped me

This whole week has genuinely been eye-opening. The supportive team, relaxed working environment, and hands-on tasks helped me grow both personally and professionally, while also building my confidence in areas I was initially unfamiliar with. Being able to learn at my own pace, ask questions freely, and work creatively showed me what a healthy and motivating workplace looks like.

Most importantly, my time at Merx confirmed my interest in marketing as a future career and inspired me to continue my education with the goal of one day creating something of my own.
